More Than a Book: Why Summer Reading Night Matters

More Than a Book: Why Summer Reading Night Matters
As our Summer Reading Road Trip comes to an end, we’re excited to make one final stop—New York City! This Thursday, July 9th, families will join us at Timber Lakes Elementary as we explore the Big Apple through books, activities, crafts, and plenty of fun.
But Summer Reading Night has always been about much more than visiting a different state each week.
It’s about creating opportunities for children to discover the joy of reading while making lasting memories with the people who matter most—their families.
Throughout the summer, we’ve “traveled” across America without ever leaving Splendora. Together we’ve explored new places, learned about different cultures, participated in hands-on activities, and watched young imaginations come to life through the power of books.
For many students, summer can be a challenging time to maintain reading habits. Research shows that children who don’t have regular access to books during the summer are more likely to experience learning loss before the new school year begins.
In Splendora ISD, where almost 60% of our students are economically disadvantaged, providing free educational opportunities outside the classroom is especially important. Every family should have access to enriching experiences regardless of financial circumstances. By offering a free evening that includes dinner, literacy activities, crafts, and a book for every child, we’re helping remove barriers so all students have the opportunity to continue learning and growing throughout the summer.
Every family who attends enjoys:
- A free dinner
- An engaging read-aloud experience
- Interactive craft and activity stations
- Raffle prize drawings
- A free book for every student to take home
That final book may seem like a small gift, but its impact can be tremendous. A new book can spark curiosity, build confidence, encourage daily reading, and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
This week’s adventure will take us to the bright lights of New York City, where we’ll “visit” iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the Bronx Zoo through engaging stories and activities. We can’t think of a better way to wrap up an incredible summer of reading and exploration.
None of this would be possible without the support of our dedicated partners, volunteers, and community members who believe every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. Your support allows us to provide meaningful educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom and into our community.
If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time! Please register as soon as possible so we can make sure we have enough food, books, and activity supplies for everyone attending. Use this link to register: https://bit.ly/SLN2026
We hope you’ll join us this Thursday as we celebrate our final stop on this year’s Summer Reading Road Trip. Let’s make one more unforgettable journey together—and send our students into the new school year with a love for reading that lasts long after summer ends.
We can’t wait to see you in New York… right here in Splendora!
